MINUTES OF LIBRARY BOARD, NOVEMBER 1933. Shreve Memorial Library Board met in Librarian's office Friday, November 10, 1933 at 5:00 P.M. Members present were Mayor Geo W Hardy, Mrs. John P. Hird, Mr. John Tucker, Mrs. Wiltz Ledbetter, Mr. J. Fair Hardin and Mr. John F. Slattery. Mrs. Bliss presented a plea for the opening of a Branch Library for the negro. The chairman thanked Mrs. Bliss for her presentation of the Negroe's request and said that the matter would be put into the hands of a committee. The Librarian told of a much needed repairs on the drain system of the library which was not adequate to carry off the waters from torrential rains hence the Juvenile Room was flooded after each storm. The chairman said that he would take the matter up with the Water Dept. A budget for 1934 prepared for the library by the Librarian was discussed and a committee to work with Budget Committee of city was appointed - Mr. John Tucker, Mr. J. Fair Hardin, and Mrs. John Hird. This committee would also work out the Negro Branch Library question. The librarian reported that the library had been kept open until 9:00 P.M. through student help from Centenary. After a months trial the Librarian found the crowd so small after 8 P.M. that it scarcely justified keeping the doors open after 8:00 P.M. Mr. Tucker reported he had some valuable books by Margery on Louisiana which he would sell at the price he paid for them if he decided not to keep same. The Librarian stated that these books would be valuable for the Louisiana collection and would purchase them next year if Mr. Tucker still had them for sale. Librarian reported that the patriotic societies, through the efforts of Mrs. L. C. Bulkley, were trying to buy a very valuable book - Alexander Brown's Genesis of United States for $35.00 which they would present to the library. The Librarian asked permission to make up the amount which the Societies could not raise, this money to be paid out of fine money. Permission granted. Mayor Hardy expressed his appreciation of the Librarian's handling of her department, saying that the librarian had kept within the budget and no troubles had arisen from the department. No further business so meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Lois White Henderson, Secty, Library Board.
