Minutes, Library Board of Control January 17, 1989, Page 3 LIBRARY PLAZA AND DDA PROPOSAL Lane Sartor had received a letter from George Nelson, Downtown Development Authority (DDA) chairman, dated December 8, 1988 which states that the LDDA and the Library are ready to proceed with the next step in the design of the Library Plaza area. He outlines certain conditions and agreements for proceeding with the projects. [See attachment for details]. The conditions outlined covered the basic concerns of the Board. After discussing the matter, Marion Weiss moved and Ellen Caverlee seconded a motion to authorize the new president to appoint a committee and proceed to work with the DDA under the guidelines as stated in George Nelson's letter. Motion passed. WEST SHREVEPORT BRANCH The director reported that we needed to start planning for the west Shreveport branch if the opening date was to be around September or October, 1989. Of particular concern was the procedure to use in order to rent a good location. Harold Denny, the Caddo Parish Commissioner from that area had also indicated site selection was very important. The members discussed the pros and cons of several potential sites in the west Shreveport area. The director and Board talked about several different ways to approach this. All agreed that the staff should start working on a schedule which outlines what needs to be done and when. The Buildings and Grounds or the Executive Committee could be called upon if any matter or decisions needed to be handled before the next Board meeting. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Lane Sartor has been appointed to the Louisiana State Library Board and his first meeting will be January 23, 1989. He commented that this is an advisory Board and not a governing one. Jim Pelton reported that all the references had been called on Pigeon Control Systems which had submitted a proposal for a low wattage current system. This would not harm the pigeons but encourage them to go elsewhere. Several Board members still had some concerns about proceeding with this system and Haller Jackson suggested that the matter be tabled until the next meeting. No one objected to this. Mavice3 Wallette had been called by a staff member from the Louisiana Division of the Arts and asked if the Library would be interested in displaying a Martin Luther King traveling exhibit on either the week of January 30th-February 3rd or February 20th-24th. Jim Pelton said that we could check with Jeff Salter after the meeting to see if either date would be acceptale. We would like to have the exhibit.
