SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY BOARD. May 1953. The Shreve Memorial Library Board met in the office of the Librarian on May 20, 1953, at 11 A.M., with the following members present: Mr. J.C. Hamilton, Chairman, Mayor Clyde E. Fant, Mr. A.G. Hammett, Jr., Mr. C.B. Moore, Mr. Thos. O. Fitzgerald, Mr. F. Leonard Hargrove, Mrs. Marvin W. Bass, Mr. George A. Meadows, and Mr. Hardy A. O'Neal. It was moved by Mr. Meadows that the Board dispense with the reading of the minutes of the last meeting, and proceed to the election of the Chairman. Mayor Fant took the Chair and called for nominations. Mr. Hargrove nominated Mr. Hamilton and moved that nominations be closed. Upon second of this motion, Mr. Hamilton was elected by acclamation. By request of the Librarian, Mrs. Bass reported briefly on the meeting of the Louisiana Library Association and those sessions which she attended and in which she participated. Mr. Hamilton reported that he, as well as the Librarian, had been approached concerning the possible use of television time by the Library. It was the general opinion of the Board that the Library should be committed in no way, nor should approval be given any one station. The Librarian presented for the Board's consideration, a proposal for repairing and painting to be done in the Reference and Reading Rooms, and in the Librarian's office; this work to be done simultaneously with electrical repair work, and by use of the electrician's staging equipment, could be done at a materially reduced cost. After some discussion, the Librarian was directed to write a letter to the Mayor requesting that the city electrician survey and make recommendations on the needed electrical repairs, and that the city building inspector check the ceilings and report repairs required for them. Mayor Fant and Mr. Hargrove were appointed to work with the Chairman as a committee and the final decision would be left in their hands. It was reported to the Board that the petroleum and geological committee had requested permission to air-condition the room which has been assigned to the petroleum collection which they are sponsoring. The committee proposes to bear the initial expense of equipment and installation providing the Library is able to bear the operational cost, which was estimated at a nominal figure and for a period of about six months each year. Mr. Moore moved that the Board give its approval and tha tthe inspector consider the electrical needs for operating a small air-conditioning unit at the same time he makes his survey of electrical repairs. With Mr. O'Neal's second, the Board signified its approval. Mr. Moore then reported on the visits to the Parish branches made by the members from the Police Jury in March and April. Mr. Meadows said that in some instances the housing was in very poor consition but that the Police Jury does not now have the funds for the necessary repairs. Mrs. Bass suggested that it might be possible to secure some used lumber from the School Board. It was pointed out that most of the buildings in which branches are housed belong to |
