OCTOBER 27, 1923. Present, L.E. Thomas, chairman, Mrs. Edith Brown Bailie, secretary; Mesdames Pleasant, Hird, Alexander and King, with the librarain, Mrs. Lois White Henderson, also present. Monthly report read by librarian, also information that telephone, #275 had been installed. Moved by Mr. Gordon, seconded by Mrs. Hird, that report be accepted and filed with secretary. Carried. Committee was appointed by Chaiurman to make up budget for coming year, as moved by Mrs. Pleasant, seconded by Mrs. Hird. Said budget to be made up for submission at next meeting, in November, ready for submission to the City Commissioners for approval and appropriation at their December meeting. Committee appointed was Mrs. Hird, chairman, Mr. Hieber and Mrs. Bailie. Said budget will be framed in consultation with the librarain. Date of formal opening as moved by Mr. Gordan, seconded by Mrs. Hird, was approved for Thursday, December 6th, 8 o'clock. Committee in charge will be the house and grounds committee, Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Youree and Mrs. Pleasant. Mrs. Frances Otey Allen, Regent of Caddo Chapters, Daughters of the American Revolution, reported on matter of flag staff to be presented by said chapter, to be ready for date of opening. Spot for locatio will be indicated by wooden staub in said place on lawn. Letter addressed to Mrs. Alexander by Guido Marburg, former resident of Shreveport, was read regarding certain proposed additions to the attractions to the library in the way of a museum, etc. The secretary was instructed to reply asking for more definite information. Communicaton from J. Fair Hardin, Capt, J.A.G. ...O.R.C...Pres Officers Reserve Club, speaking for local Reserve Club, was read regarding list of books on military topics to be presented to the library. Moved by Mr. Gordon, seconded by Mrs. Alexander, that the secretary address a letter to Mr. Hardin, accepting the gift of books proffered, and, regarding list for purchase by the library that advice will be given regarding same at a later date, after consultation with the librarian. Secretary was also instructed to repoly to letter from Melvin F. Johnson regarding use of assembly room for two classes of First Presbyterian Sunday School, repating resolution regarding same given below, also stating fact that the library would not be open on Sunday mornings. Moved by Mrs. Pleasant, seconded by Mrs. Alexander, that the use of the assembly room of the library will be for lectures on literary topics, for which no admission charges will be made. Arrangements for same to be made through librarian. Approved. The librarian reported that two thousand ($2000 worth) new volumes had been purchased for the library, and, also, that something over six thousand volumes will be placed in use, the gift of the Peoples Library. One thousand dollars ($1000) 870 volumes will be purchased for the juvenile division and two thousand additional for adults, the latter including maps, atlases, according to list furnished by librarian, according to motion made by Mrs. Hird, seconded by Mrs. Pleasant. Approved. The librarian was authorized to have cut two doors needed to give convenient access for the librarian from stack room to work room and directors' room.
