Minutes, Library Board of Control July 26, 1988, page 3 Schedule--The goal of the staff is to bring up the online Public Access Catalog in Mid November and to have Broadmoor, Hamilton, South Caddo and the Main Library using the circulation system by January 1st. This is based on the room being done by October 1st and the system being installed by October 20th. DESIGN CHARETTE FOR LIBRARY PLAZA AREA Lane Sartor explained that Ellen Caverlee, Jeff Salter, Jim Pelton and he had participated in a design charette meeting on Monday, July 25th which was sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority (DDA). The purpose was to consider the plaza area at the Main Library. Over the past eight years several plans have been submitted for the use of this area but these did not take into consideration the main purpose which was the entrance to the library. This group talked first about the goals for this area including any requirements and restrictions the Library Board placed on the use of this area. After a preliminary viewing of slides of the plaza and how similar areas in other cities have been done. The people were divided into two groups which considered the goals for the use of this area and then came up with some preliminary ideas and sketches. It was then decided that we would meet again next Monday night to continue the process. Presumably after the plan was developed and approved, the DDA would consider how to fund the project. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Atkin's Branch Break ins--This library had been broken into 6 times in less than two weeks. The thief took a projector, 4 16mm films valued at $1,600, the microwave, telephone as well as tearing up the copy machine coin op mechanism. After the third break in, the director discussed the problem with the Board President and it was decided to install a security system. Quotes were taken from Protect Services, Bayou Security and Excelsior Security Systems, Inc. Excelsior had the low quote and was selected. The break ins continued while we sought the quotes and had the system installed. The police put a radio in the library that when unplugged notified the station. On the sixth time, the burglar took this radio but by the time the police arrived he was gone. The brought in the dogs and tracked him to his house about 3 blocks from the library. The projector, microwave, and 3 of the 4 films were recovered. The security system has been installed and is working now.
