Revised on 8-25-97 due to spelling error Shreve Memorial Library Board of Control MINUTES July 28, 1997 The Shreve Memorial library Board of Control met in the fourth floor Board room on Monday,]uly 28, 1997. Trustees present were T. Haller]ackson III, Sally Montgomery, Marion Weiss, Mary Bethel, Dr. Orella Brazile and Alonzo Hodge II. Glenn O'Bryan was absent Staff members present included Jim Pelton, Jennie Paxton and Kathy Tuminello, who recorded the minutes. Jeff Salter was summoned briefly to answer questions about the Literacy Program. Haller Jackson, president, called the meeting to order. The Board approved the minutes of the meeting on June 23, as they were formerly distributed to the trustees. Haller Jackson called for a moment of silence in memory of Mavice Wallette, who had served for 20 years on the Board of Control. After the moment of silence, he reported that funeral services would be held at 3:00 pm, after the Board meeting that day, and he will make a presentation on behalf of the Board at the funeral. He reported that the Wallette family had expressed appreciation for the Board's support during the past years. Marion Weiss arranged for flowers to be sent to the funeral on behalf of the Board. The Board president recommended a Resolution be created in memory of Mavice Wallette, and that it be displayed near the Board room. Also, the Wallette family shall be presented a copy of the Resolution. Sally Montgomery moved and Mary Bethel seconded the motion to accept the Board president's recommendation to create a Resolution in memory of Mavice Wallette, with a copy presented to her family, and another to display near the Board room. The motion passed unanimously. A rough draft of the resolution will be sent to the Board for review, and it shall be presented to the Board at the next meeting for final approval. Haller Jackson suggested that the Board make a recommendation to the Caddo Parish Commission to fill the vacancy left by Mrs. Wallette. Possibilities to fill the vacancy included Ascension Smith, who is retired form the public school system, and Zell Tucker, a young lawyer who is very active. Other suggestions should be given to Kathy Tuminello, the library's administrative secretary, who will get them out to all the trustees. Any background information, including work history, how long they lived in the community and etc., should be included, if possible, and they must live in Caddo Parish. ALA Conference: Haller Jackson and Orella Brazile attended the Trustee portion of the ALA Conference in San Francisco. It was reported that the Trustee portion was about fund-raising and stewardship. A lot of trustees are starting foundations for fund-raising, particularly where libraries don't have a lot of public support Since Shreve Memorial library's effort with the public has been successful for funds to renovate the branches, Haller did not recommend a foundation at this time. However, perhaps in four or five years a foundation type fundraiser may be considered in order to compliment what is currently being done. Other meetings at the Conference dealt with supporting the Friends of the Library groups and helping them be a more significant aspect of the Library Board, as well as offering advice from what they are seeing in the libraries or what they feel like the public is needing. Haller Jackson recommended that the Friends of the Library should he invited to the Board meetings on a more frequent basis. Sally Montgomery offered to ask the Friends group to designate a representative to attend the Board meetings. Marion Weiss stated that when the new branches open, they will have large meeting rooms where the Board meetings could be held in order to provide better parking and access for the public. |
