Shreve Memorial Library Board. May, 1954. The Shreve Memorial Library Board met in the Office of the Librarian on Friday, May 14, 1954, at 11 A.M., with the following members present: Mr. J.C. Hamilton, Chairman, Mr. C.B. Moore, Mr. F. Leonard Hargrove, Mr. George A. Meadows, Mrs. Marvin W. Bass, Mr. Thomas P. Fitzgerald, Mr. Hardy A. O'Neal, Mrs. T.B. Lanford, and Mayor Clyde E. Fant. The reading of the minutes of the previous meeting was dispensed with by acclamation. The Chairman reported that the Inspector from the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company had inspected the Library's boiler and said that it could be repaired with very little expense, however, it was thought advisable to investigate the matter further. The Librarian's recommendation, at a previous meeting, that the basement be renovated, partitioned, and equipped for the use of the City Branch Department was brought up for discussion. Mr. Hargrove, Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee, reported that he had looked the situation over and thought that repairs to the roof should be taken care of first. It was his suggestion that the space for the Branch Department be left for further study by the committee and that recommendations be made at the next meeting. The members of the Board concurred in his suggestion. The Librarian presented a verbal request from Miss Louisa Gregory for a five weeks' leave of absence, in addition to her regular vacation period, for travel in Europe. The Librarian recommended that the request be granted. Upon the motion of Mr. Hargrove and the secon dof Mr. O'Neal, the Board gove its approval, the dates being August 1st through September 5th. Mr. Hargrove then moved that staff members requesting leaves of absence should make the request by letter to the Librarian, giving specific dates, the letter to be presented by the latter for the Board's approval. The vote was unanimous. Requests from Friendship House that the Librarian of the Lakeside Branch be permitted to hold story hours there on Saturday mornings, were presented by the Librarian for the Board's consideration. Mr. Fitzgerald reported that Friendship House was sponsored by a group working for social justice for the Negro, and it is a place where White and Negro may meet together to work out mutual problems. After some discussion, Mr. O'Neal said that a matter of policy was involved in the Librarian's spending time on outside activities which do not bring new patrons to the library, story hours at the Negro Housing Development should be discontinued, and that the matter of story hours at Friendship House, not previously considered by the Library Board should not be approved. Mrs. Lanford seconded, and the Board gave its approval. It had been brought to the Librarian's attention by the Personnel Director, that Mary Perkins, the colored maid, could not participate in the retirement fund since her salary was not quite up to the minimum required for retirement deductions. Upon recommendation of Mr. Hargrove, seconded by Mrs. Bass, the Board approved a raise in salary up to the minimum of $ 101.00 per month. |
