Minutes of Library Board Meeting April 11, 1985 Page 5 Jim Pelton reported that Paul A. Frank, III, had contacted him about the possibility of using the Main Library's Entrance Plaza as a possible site for a sculpture. The Red River Revel is sponsoring a Sculpture Symposium, whereby 3 artists will be selected to produce a sculpture. When finished, these works will be displayed for one year. The artist would probably choose the final site after comparing available locations. (See Attachment #3 for details about the sculpture project.) This matter was referred to the Executive Committee by Lane Sartor. In the Librarian's Report, Jim Pelton stated that the library would be using a contract reading program this summer and that we would also offer a ""Read to Me"" program for non-readers -- preschool children. Up to this time, a child who could not read was not allowed to participate in the Summer REading Program. This will encourage parents to understand the importance of sharing the joy of reading at an early age. (See ATtachment #4 -- Shirley Dickerson, Children's Librarian for more details.) For the second year, the materials for the Summer Reading Program will be used all over Louisiana and the them is ""Find Your Own Adventure -- Read"". Steve Kennedy, a part-time assistant at the Atkins Branch Library, was selected as the artist for the Statewide Summer Reading Program materials. The supplies will be received shortly. Hufty's Carpet was selected as the low bidder to install Bolick carpet at the Broadmoor Branch Library. This was a bid through the City's purchasing department. As soon as the required performance bond is received, the bid will be awarded. It is likely that the library will be closed one day for the installation. The staff is trying to set it up so that bookmobile service will be offered in the parking lot until 5 o'clock, if possible. This would allow patrons to return material and check out books from a limited collection. Jim Pelton has received a letter from the Trust Department of the 1st National Bank which include a copy of the Last Will and Testament of the late Constance Chatterton Spears. In this will, she donated all her books to Shreve Memorial Library. This letter had just been received and we have no information about how many books there are, condition, value, etc. (See Attachment #5.) The Northwest Louisiana Libraries Trustees Meeting will be held April 26, 1985, at Arcadia, Louisiana. All Board members will be receiving a personal invitation. Meeting adjourned. Secretary
