SML Board of Control - Minutes January 22, 1996, Page 4 Orella Brazile stated that the Black community groups were left: out of the focus during the last election, and she suggested that efforts be made to contact them this time. She suggested obtaining The Green Pages, a book listing businesses related to the Black communities. Glenn O'Bryan suggested that maps showing the existing branch locations and the proposed branch locations be prepared to use during speaking engagements. Campaign mottos were discussed and the following suggestions were made: (1) Marion Weiss suggested -- ""A Sound plan For Our Future""; (2) Jim Pelton suggested using the word ""Good Libraries"" instead of ""Better"" in other mottos, but Marion Weiss and Glenn O'Bryan suggested ""Better Libraries"" since we already have ""good"" libraries and employees. BOARD MEETING ATTENDANCE: The issue of Board meeting attendance was tabled until the next meeting. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: New Book: Jim Pelton reported that Shreve Memorial Library's Headquarters building and a brief article appears in a new book, Cultural Gems: An Eclectic Look At Unique United States Libraries. He considers it an honor for our building to be included in the book. Grace Simmons, Librarian III of Special Collections of Shreve Memorial Library, researched and wrote the article for the book, and her husband took the photo of the building. She was disappointed in the editing, which confuses the reader about the old and new building, so a copy of her original article was distributed to the Board (see attached). Haller Jackson suggested that Grace Simmons should prepare an article for the local newspapers. Legal Update: [Redacted] Carpeting Update:- Jim Pelton reported that the Library Headquarters will be closed for periods of time during the next 2 to 3 months for recarpeting. One floor at a time will be -closed, except when the first floor is being done when the entire Library will be closed to the public. The meeting adjourned.
