SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY BOARD. December 1948. The Shreve Memorial Library Board met in the office of the Librarian on December 20th, at 11 A.M. with the following members present: Mr. J.C. Hamilton, Chairman, Mrs. T.B. Lanford, Mayor Clyde E. Fant, Mr. George A. Meadows, Mr. J.P. Fullilove, Mr. C.B. Moore, and Mr. Leonard F. Hargrove. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved by those present. A sign for the main library was again under discussion and the Librarian reported that architect Sam Wiener had been consulted and had recommended raised bronze letters in place of the name placques over the main entrance. B & B Sign System had estimated that the letters could be made and enstalled for $125.00 - $150.00. The Board was not inclined to sacrifice the name placques and it was suggested that the Chairman and the Librarian confer with B & B as to a neon sign for the main archway and report to the Board at its next meeting. The Librarian then submitted a revised budget for the Parish Department based on the Police Jury's appropriation for 1949, pointing out changes it had been necessary to make in the previous budget in order to stay within the slightly smaller allotment. Mr. Moore moved that the budget be adopted. Mr. Meadows gave the second and the Board its approval. $15,400.00. The Chairman placed before the Board for its consideration, the advisability of retiring Mrs. Coy Tillinghast due to ill health. After some discussion, the Librarian was directed to put the request in the form of a letter to the Mayor, giving pertinent facts. A proposed budget for the city library for 1949 was submitted with explanations being made by the Librarian. After due consideration, Mayor Fant moved that the budget be accepted, Mr. Hargrove gave the second and the Board its approval. $183,870.00. Several requests had been made of the Librarian which she felt called for Board action and these were presented. One of the local DAR groups wished to place a locked file in the library for the housing of their secret records, the Board felt that such action would be setting a precedent but suggested that the Chairman confer with the group before final decision was made. The Broadmoor Garden Club had requested that self space be set aside in the Braodmoor [Broadmoor] Branch for their gardenb ooks to be circulated to their members only. The Board preferred that a written request be submitted by the Club before any action could be taken. Mr. Karam of Fortier Drug wanted to purchase a cabinet which had been donated to the Library several years ago. It was the opinion of the Board that no property of the Library could be sold or disposed of without advertising it for sale and they were not in favor of selling a donated piece of property. The Librarian reported that on the occasion of the Library's twenty-fifth anniversary, the Shreveport Lions Club had given a Projected Books machine and twenty-three microfilm books to be used with children confined to their beds. The Board was exceedingly pleased and appreciative of the gift and Mayor Fant moved that the Chairman express the Board's appreciation to the Lions Club by letter. Mr. Hargrove moved that the Board's appreciation and thanks be extended to the staff of the Shreve Memorial Library and to the participating organizations for
