MINUTES OF THE SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY. City January Report 1931. January 9, 1931. The Shreve Memorial Library Board met in the office of the Librarian at 5 o'clock on January 9, 1931. The following members were present: Mayor Palmer, Mr. J. Fair Hardin, Mr. John Slattery, Mrs. Clarence King, Mr. John P. Hird. A quorum of the board being present, the regular business of the meeting was taken up. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The report of the Librarian was read and approved. A long discussion of the Parish Library work was entered into but no definite action was taken as the Board felt certain problems were yet to be decided. Mrs. Begbie, President of the Altrusa Club, came before the Board and presented a collection of books on Vocational Guidance. This collection included principally the books included in the Forum Library endorsed by Mr. G.O. Houston, and known as the Industrial Forum Library. The Board accepted this collection and expressed its appreciation of the gift. The matter of rules and regulations regarding sick leave for members of the staff was brought before the Board and the Librarian requested that a committee of ladies be appointed to act on these rules. After some discussion no action was taken and no committee was appointed. The plan for handling the ""fine money"" was discussed, but no definite action was taken. The ""fine money"", it was report by the librarian, was being sent to the city at the present time. Bills for 1930 were brought up for payment and it was decided that all bill now due for 1930 must be paid out of 1930 funds, in order that there be no infringement on the 1931 budget. These bills were passed upon and sent ot the city finance departmant for payment. The method of handling requests was presented by Mr. Hardin. The Board thought the request slips given to the patrons asking for books not in the library would invite and encourage people to present their desires and tastes and give the library a good basis upon which to purchase books. It was also suggested that at the end of each month the requests which the library could not supply be made known to the person making such request. The Librarian reported that such a lip could be printed and mailed to each person, acknowledging the request and giving some information as to when the book could be expected. An expenditure of $9.75 would buy 5,000 of these slips, ample to carry on this service for some time. The Librarian requested an extension of the telephone which would give more efficient and better service. This request was granted. There being no further business, the Board adjourned to meet again Friday, February 13, at 4 o'clock. SECRETARY OF THE BOARD.
